The Digital Life

My old computer's fine!

OK, so you don’t need to be at the cutting edge of technology, the Jones’s will always have what the Jones’s will have ... but...you definately don't want to have old technology. Technology doesnt mature with age, it just becomes redundant. Software and operating system vendors keep improving their producs with more and more enhancements and security features, internet speeds get faster and faster and the need for hardware that can keep up becomes imperative.

Everything is online now - work, social life, banking, TV. Old hardware running old software and operating systems miss out on a lot of this. They don’t have the resources to run it...but they do lead the pack in security breaches. The internet is a never ending battle between the good guys and the bad guys. Antivirus companies like Bitdefender and Trend Micro do a great job in protecting against attacks, but it still comes down to the end user and if your hardware wont install the security software you end up getting hacked ...and potentially lose a lot more than an upgrade would have cost.

Almost all programs are now subscription based which means you can pay a smaller monthly cost and always have the latest package. If you cancel your subscription most of them will remain usable, just wont be updated and protected.

For the Windows crowd ... I'm pretty sure no one is still running Windows 95/8, it wont run on most hardware these days, but you can still run old programs in a compatibility mode on the newer operating systems. XP, Windows 7 are all end of life as far as support goes, and security patches will not continue. Windows 8 is now old and Win 10 is pretty solid.

For the Apple crowd ... it's not too late to get a Windows PC.
